The Life of St. Francis

By Bonaventure

A classic work of Christian literature commissioned by the Franciscan Order in the year 1250, The Life of St. Francis by St. Bonaventure—the Tuscan scholastic theologian and the greatest Franciscan mystic after St. Francis himself—is both a biography and an enlightening and inspiring spiritual treatise. A noteworthy addition to the HarperCollins Spiritual Classics series with a foreword by Donna Tartt, author of The Little Friend and The Secret History, this new edition of Bonaventure’s The Life of St. Francis reflects profoundly on the life of the virtues which Francis presented as the ideal of Gospel perfection.

Restavec

From Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American

by Jean-Robert Cadet

African slaves in Haiti emancipated themselves from French rule in 1804 and created the first independent black republic in the Western Hemisphere. But they reinstituted slavery for the most vulnerable members of Haitian society—the children of the poor—by using them as unpaid servants to the wealthy. These children were—and still are—restavecs, a French term whose literal meaning of "staying with" disguises the unremitting labor, abuse, and denial of education that characterizes the children's lives.

Ruth A Portrait: The Story of Ruth Bell Graham

by Patrica Cornwell

Ruth Bell Graham is known as the wife of evangelist Billy Graham. It was Ruth who influenced Billy, as his most trusted life-partner. In Ruth, a Portrait, we meet this fascinating and remarkable woman. Brimming with anecdotes, this is a breathtaking journey, with stops at many of this century's epoch-making events.

The childhood years of the future Mrs. Billy Graham were spent light-years away--in the China of the 1920s and 1930s. The daughter of medical missionaries, she and her family were caught in a crucible of unspeakable hardship; in addition to pestilence and plague, there was the unstable political and military turmoil surrounding the Nationalist government, the Communists, and the Japanese invaders. These hazardous realities shaped Ruth Bell and her family, a family inured to difficulties, but buoyed up by their deep belief in God's abiding will.

Virtually raised by the Grahams, the author is a repository of Ruth Bell Graham's stories and has seen firsthand the spirit of this courageous woman. Patricia Cornwell not only gives readers a full, rounded, and intimate portrait of Ruth Bell Graham, but also insight into the life of the Graham family and particularly Billy Graham.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass & Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

by Fredrick Douglass

Born into slavery, Douglass became the preeminent spokesman for his people during his life; his narrative is an unparalleled account of the dehumanizing effects of slavery and Douglass's own triumph over it. Like Douglass, Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery, and in 1861 she published Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, now recognized as the most comprehensive antebellum slave narrative written by a woman. Jacobs's account broke the silence on the exploitation of African American female slaves, and it remains essential reading. Kalaupapa National Historical Park and the Legacy of Father Damien

by Anwei Law

The story of Father Damien is easy to read and very informative. Written in such a way that the reader feels connected with Kalaupapa and the lives of the Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) patients of that time. In this book you will see the many improvements made to Kalaupapa by Father Damien, to improve the living conditions of the captive patients. What a giving priest he was, and how he simply became one in the patient's daily living, rather than fearing them and isolating from them. He helped to make the patients feel worthy rather than outcasts, as society had dubbed them. I recommend this book. A fast read and very touching.

Abigail Adams

by Phyllis Lee Levin

Wife of one president and mother of another, Abigail Adams was an extraordinary woman living at an extraordinary time in American history. A tireless letter writer and diarist, her penetrating and often caustic impressions of most of the major persons of her day--including Ben Franklin, George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and King George III, among others--provide one of the best first-hand accounts of the American Revolution. This biography, researched and written over a fourteen-year period, is a fascinating portrait of a brilliant woman at the center of the founding of the American republic.

A Short Life of Jonathan Edwards

by George M. Marsden

Jonathan Edwards is one of the most extraordinary figures in American history. Arguably the most brilliant theologian ever born on American soil, Edwards (1703–1758) was also a pastor, a renowned preacher, a missionary to the Native Americans, a biographer, a college president, a philosopher, a loving husband, and the father of eleven children.

George M. Marsden -- widely acclaimed for his magisterial large study of Edwards -- has now written a new, shorter biography of this many-sided, remarkable man. A Short Life of Jonathan Edwards is not an abridgment of Marsden's earlier award-winning study but is instead a completely new narrative based on his extensive research. The result is a concise, fresh retelling of the Edwards story, rich in scholarship yet compelling and readable for a much wider audience, including students.

Known best for his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Jonathan Edwards is often viewed as a proponent of fire, brimstone, and the wrath of God. As Marsden shows, however, the focus of Edwards's preaching was not God's wrath but rather his overwhelming and all-encompassing love. Marsden also rescues Edwards from the high realms of intellectual history, revealing him more comprehensively through the lens of his everyday life and interactions. Further, Marsden shows how Edwards provides a window on the fascinating and often dangerous world of the American colonies in the decades before the American Revolution.

Marsden here gives us an Edwards who illumines both American history and Christian theology, an Edwards that will appeal to readers with little or no training in either field. This short life will contribute significantly to the widespread and growing interest in Jonathan Edwards.

Rowan's Rule

by Rupert Shortt

Rowan Williams is a complex and controversial figure. Widely revered for his personal qualities, he is also an intellectual giant who towers over almost all his predecessors as Archbishop of Canterbury. Among many other achievements he has trounced the atheist Richard Dawkins, and published over twenty well-regarded books, including several volumes of poetry and a major study of Dostoevsky. Yet he is also one of the most reviled church leaders in modern history. Long before facing calls to step down after his lecture on sharia law in 2008, he had been accused of heresy on account of his pro-gay views and begged to resign by conservative members of his own flock. He had disappointed many of his own supporters as well. Progressives who expected him to champion the cause of clergy in same-sex relationships were dismayed by what seemed like his ragged retreat on the issue. So how has high office changed Rowan Williams Has he been bullied and manipulated or is he perhaps playing a long game, obliged to rate church unity above the pursuit of his own vision at a time when the Anglican Communion has looked ever more unstable Rupert Shortt, already the author of an acclaimed introduction to the archbishop's thought, now offers answers to these and other questions in this authoritative biography. Written with Rowan Williams's full cooperation, it not only elucidates his ideas, but gives a compelling portrait of a private and in some ways surprisingly vulnerable man.

Paul: The Man of Grace and Grit

by Charles R. Swindoll

The apostle Paul was, in his own words, "the chief of all sinners." Yet, this colossal figure left an indelible signature of greatness. Join renowned pastor Charles Swindoll in Great Lives: Paul as he examines the influence and impact of this remarkable man.

Tough, tenacious, and fiercely determined, Paul pursued his divine mission with unflinching resolve, and God used him mightily to turn the world upside down for Christ in his generation. Perhaps that's why Paul's life is such a source of hope for us. If the chief of sinners can be forgiven and become God's chosen vessel, can He not forgive and use us as well?

In Great Lives: Paul, the sixth book in his bestselling Great Lives series, Swindoll argues that no other person in the Bible, aside from Christ himself, had a more profound influence on his world and ours today than Paul.

Within the pages of Great Lives: Paul, Swindoll paints a vivid picture of Paul's incredible life and legacy, tracing the story of how God reached down to Paul in all his self-righteous zeal and:

  • crushed his pride
  • softened his heart
  • and transformed this once-violent aggressor into an influential spokesman for Christ

Join Swindoll as he invites you to travel far back to another place in another era--allowing us to focus our attention on this one man's life, clinging closely to his side. Hopefully, as a result, our lives will never again be the same.
