At St. John's Church, we believe that marriage is a sacrament participating in the life of God, and that every marriage has a ministry to the world. Our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner of life by his presence and first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. It signifies to us the mystery of the joyful union between Christ and his Church. Consequently, we rejoice every time we hear of a wedding. At the same time, we take weddings very seriously. A church is not a venue for events; it is a Christian community where members live out their commitment to Jesus Christ.
Active members of St. John’s may be married here, and our expectations of the couple are high. We expect those who marry here to be consistent in their practice of weekly Christian worship for the year prior to their wedding. No wedding will be performed at St. John’s Church until the couple has completed at least six weeks of pre-marital counseling. The liturgy we use for weddings employs powerful language to describe the commitment that the bride and groom make to each other, and firmly locates their marriage within the Body of Christ. We would not want any couple to use that liturgy for their wedding unless they are fully prepared to participate in that liturgy and repeat its vows honestly and with integrity.
