Richard W. Keeler, Sr., 90, formerly of Taborton, died Friday (June 4, 2010) at Evergreen Health Care Center in Stafford Springs, CT after a long illness.
Born in Troy, NY on November 17, 1919, he was son of the late Farnam Keeler and Maude Hammond Keeler and husband for fifty-four years of the late Jane H. Gillespie Keeler.
He was raised in Troy and resided in Brunswick for many years. He was a 1935 graduate of Troy High School and earned his Bachelor's Degree in business administration from Siena College in 1950.
Mr. Keeler was a purchasing agent for John A. Manning Paper from 1950-1973, was a self employed fiber broker operating Abaca Plantations in Ecuador, South America, and was Treasurer for several years at George H. Cole Plumbing and Heating in Troy. He was most recently employed by Atlantis Equipment, Corporation in outside sales from which he retired in 2008.
Many of Mr. Keeler's life accomplishments were: He was one of the founders of Troy Youth Hockey and the Brittonkill School District; He was an original member of the Board of Education; He was Supervisor of the Town of Brunswick and a communicant and member of the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy; at age fourteen, Mr. Keeler was the youngest Eagle Scout in New York State; He was a lifetime member of Mount Zion Masonic Lodge and Grand Master and Right Worshipful; He was a Master Sergeant during World War II and served in the US Army Supply Corps in Europe; He was a member and past president of the Purchasing Managers Association.
Survivors include two sons, Richard W. (Chris) Keeler, Jr., of Sand Lake and John F. (Cindi) Keeler of West Sand Lake; two daughters, Karen D. Keeler of Southport, NC and Susan K. (Harry) Plander of Somers, CT and his grandchildren, James E. Spadaccia of New York City, Amanda J. Keeler of Sand Lake, Sarah J. and Megan E. Keeler of West Sand Lake.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, 146 First Street, Troy, with Deacon Sandy Tatem, officiating.
Relatives and friends may call at Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy, on Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY.
