Averill Park - Martha Couchot Leckonby, 104 great healthy years and looking forward to celebrating her 105th birthday in November, died Monday, August 25, 2025, at Samaritan Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Cohoes on November 13, 1920, she was daughter of the late Lawrence E. Couchot and Lillian Clark Couchot and wife of the late George B. Leckonby, Jr.
Martha was a resident of Rensselaer County for the last hundred (100) years, having resided during her youth with her parents and siblings on 8th and on Congress Streets, in Troy; but ultimately settled with her husband and three young sons in their house located in the hamlet of West Sand Lake. Ultimately, after her husband’s passing, she resided in the community of Glass Lake in Averill Park.
She was a graduate of Troy High School, class of 1939.
Martha was employed at New York State Higher Education Services Corporation for 15 years before retiring on March 28, 1991. She was an active communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy and was in charge of the Altar Guild. She also worked at the Church Thrift Shop for several years.
For many years, Martha and her husband enjoyed dancing to the sounds of Big Band music and were particularly devoted followers of the Russ and Jack Morgan Orchestras. They also loved watching their youngest son, David during his dirt-track racing years and loved visiting their son Bob’s house at Hulett’s Landing, Lake George.
Martha enjoyed and was renowned for her gardening, her love for dogs, cats, birdwatching, dress making and knitting. Particularly, she loved living at her Glass Lake, lakeside apartment, at her son Barry’s residence, where she resided since 2009.
Survivors include her three sons, George Barrett -Barry- (Thania) Leckonby, III, Averill Park, Robert S. (Janice) Leckonby, Queensbury and David L. (Laurie) Leckonby, Averill Park. Her grandchildren, Amy (Stephen) Pratt, Queensbury, Gary (Stacy) Leckonby, Pittsburgh, PA, George Barrett -Kip- (Aga) Leckonby IV, Castleton, Roy (Tiffany) Leckonby, Boulder, CO and Adam (Jennifer) Leckonby, Averill Park. Her other grandchildren, Allison Bradley, Albany, Kiersten (Scott) Kotronis, Wilmington, NY, and Brian Michael (Cassandra) Bradley, Charlotte, NC. Her great-grandchildren, William and Oliver Pratt, George Barrett, V -Quinton- and Jula Leckonby, Charlie Leckonby, Alexandra and Maxwell Leckonby, Cody, Cameron and Hannah Barry, Arya Kotronis, Elizabeth -Libby- and Hannah Daily. She was predeceased by her sister, Marian Safford, two brothers, Lawrence C. and G. Richard Couchot and daughter in law, Brenda Elizabeth Ann Grain Leckonby.
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 from 4-6 PM.
Funeral service will be held Thursday at 12 Noon at St. John’s Episcopal Church 149 First Street Troy with Rev. Judith Malionek, Rector, officiating.
Interment, at a later date, will be in Elmwood Cemetery West Sand Lake.
