Midweek News

April 10, 2024

Dear People of Saint John’s,

We have much to share!  First of all, coffee hour needs hosting for the next three weeks.  This Sunday is Birthday Sunday, and we have arranged for the cake to be brought, so it is just a matter of setting up the coffee and plates, and perhaps offering something savory alongside the cake.  Call the office or answer this email to sign up.

Second we have News from the Shepherd’s Storehouse Pantry.

We served 83 people at our April pantry; they received laundry detergent, TP, eggs, and fresh produce (potatoes, cantaloupe, romaine, zucchini, green peppers, and oranges).

We are grateful for the help of: Jamie & Linda McDonald, Brian Thomson, Carol Daniel, Carol McTague, Claudia Dyer, Pascal Bassene and his brother Matthieu, Deacon Paul, and Gideon Bauer and his friend Max Slavik.

Our next pantry is May 4. Because of your generosity our pantry funds are in very good shape! Thank you! Gail and Lois, Team Leaders

Following up on our delightful evening on Saint Patrick’s Day, younger adults of Saint John’s will be gathering on Sunday, April 21st, at 5 pm, for a potluck and discussion, ending with Compline, an ancient service of night prayers found in our prayer book, beginning on page 127.

On Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, we will be hosting a Friendship Sunday. This is an opportunity to invite a friend to this particularly festive celebration of the church year. The children will have an important role to play, and we will enjoy an epistle reading in multiple languages. Come and invite a friend!

For adults interested in being trained in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we are planning a 45-hour Level 1 (Part 1) training July 7th through 13th. Mark your calendars for this opportunity to learn of the spiritual life of the young child and nurture your own spiritual life at the same time.

Garden Committee welcomes new members as we prepare for the Spring and Summer. Our garden plays an important part in Saint John’s ministry, as it welcomes hundreds of visitors during the Hidden Garden Tour (May 23rd), hosts the Easter egg hunt, enjoys the children from the Montessori school three days a week, provides an urban oasis on summer mornings for the neighbors and thrift store shoppers, and embraces occasional coffee hours, AA meetings and other church gatherings. To join in, be in touch with Gail Richardson or Jennifer Firth.

Our Sanctuary plays an important role not only in our life of worship, but as a holy outreach. We host tours of our sacred space, not as a museum, but as a place of sacred encounter. People have joined our congregation at Saint John’s, starting with a sanctuary tour. Coming up, we have a Hudson Valley Community College tour on April 30th and the Hidden Garden Tour on May 23rdWould you consider becoming a docent, i.e., a host of these tours? Please let me know if you would be interested in learning more about our architecture, windows, and special features of our sanctuary, with an eye toward welcoming others into the sacred life of Saint John’s.

With gratitude for our life together,

Mother Judith
