We have no one signed up for coffee hour this Sunday!  Coffee hour need not be elaborate, and everyone will appreciate a little something to enjoy with their coffee or tea.  If you can help, please call the office or reply to this email.

This Sunday, September 7th, there will be a calendar meeting after church in the gym.  The hope is that we will be able to map out the coming academic year, with an eye toward ensuring that all the aspects of our life are included and in balance: liturgy (including music), prayer, adult and children's formation, fellowship, family events, outreach, planning and administration.  This meeting is open to everyone.

Later that afternoon, the Capital English Country Dancers will be starting their season with a dance workshop from 2 to 4.  Moving in sync to beautiful music with others can be a peaceful, joyful, magical experience.  Free Admission, donations welcome, no partner needed, all dances taught!  Do come!

Be sure to invite some friends to Welcoming Sunday, September 14. We look forward to seeing those of you who have been vacationing away. It will be the Choir’s first Sunday back after summer break. We will be returning to the laity leading the Prayers of the People in the midst of the congregation (see the Autumn newsletter), with the Daughters of the King initiating this. This will be a Children's Service, with the children taking liturgical roles as they begin their Sunday School year.  Afterward in the gym, we will have not only parish groups at tables explaining their ministries, but also those who have programs in our building--the Athletic Haven, the English Country Dancers, recovery ministries and Music Together--will be coming, too.

The following Friday, September 19th, we will have a Welcoming Potluck International Supper from 6 to 7:30 pm in the gym.  This will be our first dinner of the season!  Sign up in the hallway to come and bring a favorite dish from your heritage.  And invite your friends!

And now a word from the delightful Linda McDonald, our Foyer Group coordinator:

"Here at St. John's we offer the opportunity to be part of small, informal groups, known as Foyer Groups.  Each group consists of 8 to 10 adults, couples and singles, of any age who gather about once a month October through May for purely social reasons.

"Groups are formed prayerfully and randomly with the intention of establishing new friendships and deepening old ones. Each group will be unique in that the members decide when and where they will meet to share a simple meal. That simple meal can be whatever each host chooses - soup and bread, pizza, take-out or a homemade dish. Groups from St. John's have taken turns meeting in the host's home, at a restaurant, at a picnic site or in the Thompson Room.

"A sign-up sheet is in the Parish House hallway and will be available in the gym on Welcoming Sunday.  Please consider enriching your life through a Foyer Group."

The Cathedral of All Saints will be celebrating an Evensong and Organ Recital on Sunday, September 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  The Annual Bible Symposium, jointly sponsored by our Cathedral and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, features Dr. Khaled Emmanuel Anatolios, chair of the Theology Department of Notre Dame, speaking on the theme: The Nicene Creed turns 1700.  More information can be found on these cathedral events by following the links.

Whew!  We certainly have an abundant life!

With gratitude,

Mtr. Judith
